Considerations Before Repairing Concrete

Discovered a crack in your concrete driveway this spring?

You are probably not alone, but do not go off to your local hardware store just yet. First you have to make sure that the crack is at the same height on both sides. If not it is probably too big of a job for a one-person weekend home improvement project.

One of the disadvantages of concretes is that making repairs can be difficult for even the most experienced do-it-yourselfer because cutting out and removing the cracked section is part of the project.

If you decide to try to make the repair yourself here are some of the tools and materials you will need:

  • Circular saw
  • Diamond blade
  • A cold chisel
  • Mixable concrete

No matter if you are indoors repairing a crack in the garage or outside working on your driveway wear eye protection and something to cover your mouth and nose. Consider wearing a respirator unit. You do not want to be breathing in the dust and concrete particles.

The actual cost of the replacement materials is probably less than $100, but the equipment used in concrete repair costs considerable more. Only get involved in concrete repair if you are familiar with the equipment and wearing the safety gear. Otherwise this is one project that might be best left to the professionals. Repairing concrete can create more trouble than it is worth.
